The Best Family Ski Hotels in Austria: Childcare Ages, Ski-School Doorsteps and Beginner Slopes, Verified

Nine Austrian family ski hotels compared on the facts that decide a week with children: from what age childcare is included and for how many hours, who runs the ski school and where it meets, how far the beginner slope is, and which pools and spas have age rules. Every fact from the hotel's own site.

The Best Family Ski Hotels in Austria: Childcare Ages, Ski-School Doorsteps and Beginner Slopes, Verified

A family ski week in Austria succeeds or fails on three logistics that no hotel star rating captures: from what age the childcare takes your child and for how many hours, who runs the ski school and where it meets, and how far the beginner slope is from the breakfast table. Austria has a whole category of hotels built around exactly those three things, the Kinderhotels and family resorts, and a second category of good hotels in real ski towns that do families well without being built for them. This guide puts both on one page, with every fact taken from the hotel's own site on 1 October 2026 and the gaps left as gaps.

Three things are kept apart throughout, because they are different questions: whether the hotel welcomes families at all, what the spa and sauna age rules are, and when children may use the pools. A hotel that bans children from its sauna after lunch is not an adults-only hotel, and a hotel that welcomes babies may still run its ski school from a village meeting point rather than its own garden. If you are still choosing the resort rather than the hotel, start with the best family ski resorts in Austria; this page is for when the resort is chosen, or when the hotel is the resort.

Where a cell says "not stated", the hotel's site did not say when we looked, which is not the same as the hotel not offering it; ask when you enquire. Prices are deliberately absent except where a hotel publishes a per-hour childcare rate, because family-resort rates are all-in and move by week.

The resorts built around the children

Alpenrose Familux Resort, Lermoos (Tyrolean Zugspitz Arena)

The clearest statement of the category: childcare from seven days old to sixteen years, seven days a week from 8:30 to 21:00, with 24 carers, and the hotel's own words are that all of it is included in the normal nightly price. The ski logistics are the reason to pick it over the others for the very smallest skiers: the toddler ski school for 2.5 to 3.5-year-olds runs on the snow-covered roof of the underground garage, inside the grounds, and from age four a free shuttle takes children to the ski-school meeting point with supervised transfers. Ski rental is in the hotel and the nearest cable car is 100 metres away. Board is ultra all-inclusive with breakfast, lunch and afternoon buffets, five-course dinners, a children's restaurant and a Hipp baby corner. Pools indoor and out, a kids' pool with a pirate ship and sandy beach, a 90 m tyre slide, and one rule to know: children are allowed in the sauna area until 2 pm. Not on the site: room sizes and occupancy, babysitting, winter opening dates.

Galtenberg Family & Wellness Resort, Alpbach

Galtenberg's edge is that nothing is a shuttle ride away. The skiCHECK Alpbachtal ski-school office is right next to the hotel, courses for children from four run three or six days with lunchtime care and start on Sundays and Mondays, the rental shop is next door, the lifts are 20 metres away and the "ski&smile" practice area is directly opposite. Childcare runs every day of the week from 8:30 to 21:00 for ages 0 to 15, babies from seven days with advance booking, lunch served in the club, and the Galti Kids Club is listed among the inclusive services. Dinner is a five-to-six-course menu or buffet with a children's buffet from 6 to 9 pm, a baby menu and a 24-hour baby kitchen. The Family Therme runs indoor and outdoor pools at 34°C with a baby paddling pool and a 100 m tyre slide from 9 to 9; the 7Heaven wellness area is for adults 16 and over. Rooms are sold for two to eight people; the site does not give sizes.

Kinderhotel Felben, Mittersill

Felben is a Kinderhotel in the strict sense, and its childcare bands are the most detailed on any site we read: babies from three weeks to 23 months Monday to Saturday 9 to 8 and Sunday 9 to 4, ages two to six Monday to Saturday 8:30 to 8, older children to 8 or 9, in a dedicated baby care room, all listed as inclusive. Skiing starts on the hotel's own hill with a magic carpet beside the building: "snuffle-ski" from age two on four afternoons a week with a parent, a beginner course on four mornings taught by certified instructors from the childcare team with equipment included, and advanced courses with a partner school. The courses are paid packages rather than part of the rate, which the site is clear about. Rooms are the honest small-hotel kind: the 27 m² Family Room Hackstein has a double bed and an adaptable bunk with a bed rail; the 35 m² two-room suite gives the children their own bedroom. The indoor adventure pool is 115 m² with a 30 cm toddler pool, a 10 cm baby pool and a 56 m tube slide, open 7 to 9. Not on the site: the distance to the Mittersill and Pass Thurn lifts for the grown-ups' skiing.

Leading Family Hotels Löwe & Bär, Serfaus

Serfaus runs on a different model: the children's skiing happens in the village, and the hotels walk them to it. Löwe and Bär's childcare takes babies from their first week and teens to 17, from 8:30 to 21:00 six days a week (Sunday to Friday), with the mini club for three to six-year-olds, and the hotels say the family services are already included in the stay. The Serfaus ski school's Mini-Murmlis course for three-year-olds runs 10 to 12 in Murmlipark, just below Hotel Bär in the village centre, and the hotels' staff take children there from the hotel and collect them at midday; six to twelve-year-olds ski 10:30 to 12:30 and 1:30 to 3:30, Sunday to Friday, with the Kinderschneealm at Komperdell as the next step. Board is all-inclusive with up to seven served dinner courses, a children's buffet with all-day ice cream, supervised lunch and dinner, and a 24-hour Hipp corner. One thing to be clear about: Löwe (four-star superior) and Bär (five-star) are two separate hotels under one management, each with its own water world and its own children's world. Löwe has the Pirates' water world with the 60 m "Magic Eye" tube slide, a panoramic outdoor pool and a baby pool at 31°C, and its spa is for adults and teenagers 16 and over; Bär has its own indoor pool with a 96 m speed water slide, an outdoor pool at 31°C and the 1,500 m² Bear's Beach Club. The hotels' own FAQ sets the rules for crossing between them: guests may use the partner hotel's pool landscapes, with the caveat that capacity is limited and no advance reservation is possible (reception knows the current occupancy), the adults-only sauna areas are excluded for capacity reasons, and childcare at the partner hotel is not possible, so the children's club stays at the hotel you book. Plan on your own hotel's water world and treat the other as a bonus on a quiet afternoon. Suite sizes load only in the booking engine and winter packages sell Saturday to Saturday.

Dachsteinkönig Familux Resort, Gosau

The Salzkammergut's family resort, in Gosau under the Dachstein with the Dachstein West ski area opposite. Childcare from seven days old, 8:00 to 21:00 Sunday to Friday and 9:30 to 21:00 on Saturdays, 90 hours a week with more than twenty carers, the baby, mini and teen clubs listed among the inclusions. The ski school works on a beginner slope in the hotel's own garden for children from two, with the hotel's team taking them to lessons and back and registration at reception until 4 pm the day before; rental is in the lobby, the nearest lift is directly opposite and the cable car 100 metres away, with Fredyland, the children's area, across the road. All-inclusive board with themed buffets and live cooking, and a children's buffet with its own seating area. An indoor pool with a passage to the outdoor pool, a 15 cm children's pool at 36°C and a 100 m slide; the sauna world is for adults 16 and over, with a family bio-sauna for everyone. Family suites have a separate children's room with a bunk bed; sizes and occupancy are in the booking engine only.

The town hotels that do families well

Haus Hirt, Bad Gastein

The one hotel here you would choose for the building and the town as much as the childcare: an alpine spa lodge above belle-époque Bad Gastein with an Aveda spa, and a family programme that is unusually specific. The kids' club takes three to twelve-year-olds for 45 hours a week, and in winter the day is built around skiing: a supervised children's ski bus leaves at 9:15 for the Angerer ski school in Dorfgastein, lunch included, and the club takes over again at 3; a "blue hour" runs 7 to 9 pm. Under three, a mini-kindergarten runs daily 9:30 to 3 at €8 an hour including lunch, and a nanny is available 6 am to 10 pm at €20 an hour. One thing we could not confirm from the site is whether the kids' club is in the standard rate; the family offers mention 20 hours of childcare a week included, so ask. Board is the all-day HIRT-XL service with a children's dinner at 6 pm. For the adults, the hotel bus reaches the Stubnerkogel lift in ten minutes.

Neuhaus Zillertal Resort, Mayrhofen

A resort-sized hotel in a real ski town, with the strongest water for small children of the town hotels: a 25 m infinity pool, a natural bathing lake, Seppi's Landbad indoor and outdoor pools, a toddler pool with a tractor slide and a 90 m tube slide, with the Garden Spa reserved for guests 16 and over. Childcare in Seppi's Kinderland is included for children from three, but it is an afternoon programme, five days a week from 3:15, so this is the hotel for parents who ski the morning together with the children in lessons and want the afternoon free. Gourmet half board with a children's buffet and dinner from 6:30 to 8:30, plus organic baby food. The site names the Ahorn practice area and a free ski bus nearby but does not describe the ski-school arrangement, so ask; its first-turns offer runs 6 January to 20 March 2027. Family suites from 60 m² with separate bedrooms sleep up to seven.

The childcare is the catch to understand: a trained carer runs the programme during the Austrian school holidays, and it is included then, but outside those weeks there is no club, and babysitting is for a fee and on request. The pool is a large public adventure pool, indoor and outdoor, with slides and a toddler pool. The Hopsi Winter childland on the Planai is the beginner area; the hotel does not describe the ski-school meeting point. Winter packages run 18 December 2026 to 1 April 2027, with a family Easter special from 13 March.

Zell am See's five-star-superior is on this list for the suites and the location rather than a kids' club: the 50 m² garden-side suite takes up to four with a separate living area, the 90 m² wellness garden suite has two bedrooms with their own bathrooms and is the one the hotel recommends for families, and the family apartment adds a separate bedroom. Childcare is on request and for a charge, with a supervised-free play room otherwise. The ski logistics are the hotel shuttle to the CityXpress and Schmittenhöhe lifts, courses bookable at the hotel, a heated ski cellar and a rental discount. How to choose between them

  • Under three, or you want to ski all day yourselves: a Familux or Kinderhotel. Alpenrose and Dachsteinkönig for the slope inside the grounds and the longest hours, Felben for the most detailed baby care, Galtenberg for the ski school and lifts within a hundred metres.
  • Three and up, and you want a village as well as a hotel: Löwe & Bär in Serfaus, where the children's skiing is a short, escorted walk, or Haus Hirt in Bad Gastein if the adults want a thermal town and a design hotel.
  • Older children who ski, and a real resort for the grown-ups: Neuhaus in Mayrhofen, Royer in Schladming during the Austrian holiday weeks, Salzburgerhof in Zell am See for the suites.
  • Read the age rules, not the labels. All nine welcome families; what differs is whether the sauna is 16 and over (most), whether children leave the sauna area at 2 pm (Alpenrose), and whether the pool has a baby section (the resorts) or is a public bath (Royer).

Our verdict

Choosing the resort first? The best family ski resorts in Austria weighs the towns; where to ski in the Alps sets Austria against its neighbours; the best time to visit the Austrian Alps picks the week; and for the sanest way to get a family and its skis there, flights for ski season.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best family ski hotel in Austria?
For the youngest children, the purpose-built family resorts win on logistics: Alpenrose in Lermoos, Galtenberg in Alpbach, Kinderhotel Felben in Mittersill, Dachsteinkönig in Gosau and Löwe and Bär in Serfaus all include childcare from the first weeks of life on age-specific schedules (the table in the guide gives each one, and they differ by age and day), and put a beginner slope at or opposite the door. For a stylish hotel in a real town with a kids' club and a supervised ski shuttle, Haus Hirt in Bad Gastein. There is no single best; there is a best for your children's ages and how much of the day you want to ski.
From what age do Austrian family ski hotels take children into childcare?
Earlier than most parents expect. Alpenrose, Galtenberg, Dachsteinkönig and Löwe and Bär state care from the first week of life, Kinderhotel Felben from three weeks, all on their own sites. Haus Hirt's kids' club runs for ages 3 to 12, with a separate mini-kindergarten from about 18 months that is charged by the hour. Always check the age bands, because the hours and the included-or-paid status change by age.
What does 'childcare included' actually mean?
At the purpose-built resorts it means the kids' clubs are in the nightly rate: Alpenrose says everything is included in the normal nightly price, Galtenberg and Felben list the clubs among their inclusive services, Löwe and Bär say the services are already included, Dachsteinkönig lists the clubs among its inclusions. It does not mean babysitting in your room, which is paid and on request where it exists, nor ski lessons, which are separate courses with their own prices everywhere.
Can children ski straight from the hotel?
At four of these, the beginner slope is on the hotel's own ground or directly opposite: Alpenrose's toddler ski school is on the snow-covered roof of its garage, Felben has its own hill with a magic carpet, Dachsteinkönig's ski school works on a slope in the hotel garden, and Galtenberg's practice area is across the road. In Serfaus the hotels walk children to the village Murmlipark and collect them at midday. Haus Hirt runs a supervised shuttle to the ski school in Dorfgastein.
Are these hotels all-inclusive?
Some are. Alpenrose and Dachsteinkönig sell an all-inclusive board with buffets through the day, Löwe and Bär call it all-inclusive with up to seven dinner courses, Haus Hirt's HIRT-XL service runs from breakfast to dinner. Galtenberg, Felben and the town hotels run on half board or a full-board variant, with a children's buffet at dinner. The children's dinner hour matters more than the label: Galtenberg's buffet runs 6 to 9 pm, Haus Hirt serves children at 6.
Which Austrian family hotels have age rules for the spa or pool?
Most keep an adults-only sauna area: Galtenberg's 7Heaven and Dachsteinkönig's sauna world are 16 and over, Hotel Löwe's spa is 16 and over, Neuhaus Zillertal's Garden Spa is 16 and over, and Alpenrose allows children in the sauna area only until 2 pm. The pools themselves are for everyone at all of them, usually with a separate toddler or baby pool. These are separate facts from whether the hotel welcomes families, which all nine do.
When should you book a family ski hotel in Austria?
As early as you can for the Christmas, February half-term and Easter weeks, when the family resorts sell out first and some, like Löwe and Bär, book Saturday to Saturday. Most of these hotels had not published their winter 2026/27 opening dates when we checked on 1 October 2026; Sporthotel Royer's winter packages run 18 December 2026 to 1 April 2027 and Neuhaus Zillertal's first-turns offer 6 January to 20 March 2027, so ask for dates when you enquire.
