Grindelwald vs Lauterbrunnen: Where Should You Base in the Jungfrau Region?

These two valleys are the classic Jungfrau bases, fifteen minutes apart and worlds away in feel. Grindelwald is the lift-connected hub with the Eiger overhead; Lauterbrunnen is the cliff-and-waterfall valley floor with the car-free villages above it. The right pick depends on whether you're driving and how high you want to wake up.

Common questions

Is Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen better for hiking?
Both are excellent and connected by the same lift network. Grindelwald's First area and the Männlichen ridge are standouts; from Lauterbrunnen you'll head up to Mürren and the Schilthorn for the high trails.
Which is better if I don't have a car?
Either works — both sit on the train line from Interlaken. Grindelwald edges it for car-free travelers thanks to more in-town amenities and direct lift access.
