Ortisei vs Cortina: Which Dolomites Base Is Better?
The two marquee bases in the Dolomites, two valleys and a couple of mountain passes apart. Ortisei is the warm, well-rounded heart of Val Gardena, lifts from the centre, brilliant food, and the easiest first Dolomites trip. Cortina is the glamorous, dramatic one, pricier and more spread out, but the launch point for the range's most famous hikes. Here's how to choose.

First-time Dolomites
Ortisei
Walkable, lift-served from the centre, and the most well-rounded base, the lowest-stress introduction to the range.
Couples & style-seekers
Cortina
Glamorous, dramatic, and built for the evening passeggiata, the more romantic, see-and-be-seen base.
Families
Ortisei
Lifts and the Alpe di Siusi meadows right from town, gentler logistics, and better value than Cortina.
Iconic hikes
Cortina
Tre Cime di Lavaredo, Lago di Sorapis, and the Cinque Torri are all on its doorstep, the headline trails of the Dolomites.
Common questions
- Can you visit both Ortisei and Cortina in one trip?
- Yes. They're about two hours apart over the great Dolomites passes (Gardena and Falzarego), and the classic road trip pairs them, exactly as in our 5-day Dolomites road trip. Give each base at least two nights and drive the passes in between as a highlight, not just a transfer.
- Do you need a car in either Ortisei or Cortina?
- Effectively yes for both. Public buses exist, but the best trailheads, passes, and viewpoints are far easier with a car. Of the two, Ortisei is the more walkable once you're there, its lifts leave from the centre, while Cortina is more spread out and leans harder on a car.
