Tignes

High, snow-sure, and linked to Val d'Isère across the Espace Killy.

Tignes

Tignes is a purpose-built high-altitude resort above the Tarentaise, strung around the Lac de Tignes at over 2,000m and linked by lifts to Val d'Isère as the vast Espace Killy ski area. The Grande Motte glacier means snow into spring and even summer skiing, while the lake and surrounding peaks turn it into a high, raw playground for hikers and bikers in green season. It's function over charm, a modern lift base rather than an old village, chosen for the skiing and the altitude rather than the postcard.

Either works

Car or train?

You can base in Tignes car-free and reach it by train, but a car widens your range to the quieter valleys and trailheads nearby.

Best for

  • Skiers and snowboarders
  • Snow-sure altitude
  • Espace Killy with Val d'Isère
  • Glacier and spring skiing
  • Active summers

Who should skip it

  • Old-village charm
  • Train-only travelers
  • Low-altitude comfort

Signature experiences

  • Skiing the Grande Motte glacier, with turns possible into spring and beyond
  • The full Espace Killy circuit, linking to Val d'Isère on a single pass
  • Summer days around the Lac de Tignes, hiking, biking, and even glacier skiing

Biggest mistake

Coming for alpine charm. Tignes is a high, modern lift station built for snow, not a storybook village, so if you want character with your skiing, base in Val d'Isère and ski back; if you want altitude and pistes from the door, Tignes is the pick.

Worth the splurge

A ski-in ski-out apartment or chalet at Tignes-le-Lac or Val Claret with the lifts at the door, and a glacier day when the lower snow is thin.

Good to know

Tignes questions, answered

The practical things travelers ask most before booking this base.

How many days do you need in Tignes?
A full ski week makes sense given the size of the Espace Killy and the travel to get here. In summer, a long weekend covers the lake, the trails, and a glacier ski morning.
Do you need a car in Tignes?
No. Most people arrive by transfer from Bourg-Saint-Maurice or the airports, and within Tignes the lifts and shuttles cover everything. A car is more hassle than help at altitude in winter.
Is Tignes good for summer?
Yes, in its own high-altitude way. The Lac de Tignes is a base for hiking and mountain biking, and the Grande Motte glacier offers some of the Alps' rare summer skiing, though it's a stark, high landscape rather than a green valley.
Tignes or Val d'Isère?
They share the same Espace Killy ski area, so the slopes are equal. Val d'Isère has the prettier village and livelier scene; Tignes is higher, more snow-sure, and more functional. Pick on charm versus altitude.
