Selva vs Corvara: Which Sellaronda Ski Base Is Better?

Choose Selva for the bigger local ski area, both Sellaronda directions from the village and the most to do off the skis; Corvara for Alta Badia's gentler slopes, its slope-side hotels and its food. Both villages sit on the circuit, so the loop starts at the door either way; the difference is what the other five days look like.

The winner, by traveler type

Sellaronda first-timers

Selva

Dantercepies starts the clockwise loop and Ciampinoi the anti-clockwise one, both in the village, so you choose the direction at breakfast.

Beginners & mixed groups

Corvara

74 of Alta Badia's 130 km are blue, the area runs between 1,300 and 2,800 m, and every village has its own ski school.

Non-skiers

Selva

Val Gardena grooms over 133 km of cross-country trails, the Vallunga winter walk starts in Selva, and the Mar Dolomit pool is in the valley.

Slope-side stays & food

Corvara

The valley's own listings put several Corvara addresses directly on the slopes, and Alta Badia's hut lunches and starred stube are its second sport.

Arriving without a car

Selva

Bus 350 runs hourly from Bolzano on the Brenner main line, 80 minutes to Selva; Corvara's bus 460 needs the Val Pusteria branch line to Brunico first.

Common questions

Are Selva and Corvara both on the Sellaronda?
Yes. Alta Badia's own site lists the circuit's five resorts as Corvara and Colfosco, Arabba, Canazei and Selva di Val Gardena. In Selva the Dantercepies lift starts the clockwise loop and the Ciampinoi gondola the anti-clockwise one; in Corvara the Boé gondola rises to the Sella and Col Alto to the Alta Badia slopes. The loop is about 40 km of lifts and slopes, takes about six hours, and both valleys say to be on it by 10 am.
Which is better for skiing, Selva or Corvara?
Different rather than better. Selva's own area, Val Gardena, is the larger: 181 km and 79 lifts, rising to 2,500 m at Seceda. Corvara's Alta Badia is 130 km on 54 lifts, but 74 of those kilometres are blue, which makes it the easier week for beginners and mixed groups. On the Dolomiti Superski pass you ski both from either village.
Which is better without a car?
Selva. Bus 350 from Bolzano, on the Brenner main line, reaches Selva in 80 minutes and runs hourly through the day, and the Val Gardena guest pass covers the valley and local ski buses. Corvara is 68 minutes on bus 460 from Brunico, which is itself on the Val Pusteria branch line, so the journey has one more change. Both guest passes include the winter ski buses once you are there, with one exception on the Alta Badia side: the ski bus in Badia.
When do the lifts open in winter 2026/27?
Both valleys publish 4 December 2026 to 4 April 2027. The Dolomiti Superski price bands start on 28 November, but the pass's own price list says lift operation in all valleys is not guaranteed from that date, so an early-December week is a Val Gardena or Alta Badia week only from the 4th.
Is Selva or Corvara better for a non-skier?
Selva, and Val Gardena generally: over 133 km of cross-country trails, the Vallunga winter walk from the village, marked walks on the Alpe di Siusi and at Monte Pana, and the Mar Dolomit heated outdoor pool. Alta Badia has more than 70 km of marked winter trails and 26 km of cross-country around San Cassiano, enough for a day or two but less of a programme.
