Day by day

  1. Day1

    Arrive on the Soča

    Bovec

Settle into Bovec, the laid-back adventure hub at the head of the Soča Valley, ringed by the high peaks of the Julian Alps. Shake off the drive with a first walk along the river, where the water runs a startling, almost luminous emerald green over white stone. Wander into the small town center to sort out tomorrow's rafting or kayaking with one of the local outfitters and get a feel for the rhythm of the place. Keep the first evening easy with a riverside dinner: the valley rewards an unhurried pace.

  2. Day2

    Whitewater & waterfalls

    Bovec

Get on the water early while the river is liveliest: a guided raft or kayak descent of the Soča through its gentle rapids and impossibly clear pools is the signature experience here. Outfitters supply the wetsuits, but the water is glacier-fed and cold, so go in the morning when you have the day to warm up afterward. In the afternoon, drive out to the Boka waterfall, one of the highest in the country, thundering off a cliff face and at its most powerful with early-summer snowmelt. Finish high on the Mangart saddle road, Slovenia's highest paved road, for a sunset panorama over the peaks.

  3. Day3

    History & the gorge

    Kobarid

Drive downstream to Kobarid, a smaller, gentler town with a deep history. Begin at the Kobarid Museum, an award-winning and genuinely moving account of the brutal WWI mountain front that ran through this valley, then follow a stretch of the Walk of Peace past trenches and memorials in the hills above. In the afternoon, take the well-marked trail to the Kozjak waterfall, which drops into a hidden, cathedral-like rock cavern that feels otherworldly. Wear shoes with grip, the final approach over footbridges and rock can be slick.

  4. Day4

    Gorges & a great dinner

    Kobarid

Spend the day on foot in the lower valley. The Tolmin Gorges, the deepest and southernmost point of Triglav National Park, wind between sheer walls past the Devil's Bridge and a wedged boulder called the Bear's Head, a compact and dramatic loop. Pair it with an easy stretch of the Soča Trail, which traces the river through meadows and over swaying suspension bridges. Cap the day with the reason many travelers come here at all: a tasting menu at Hiša Franko, chef Ana Roš's celebrated restaurant outside Kobarid, but reserve well ahead, often weeks out, as tables are limited and prized.

  5. Day5

    Slow exit

    Kobarid

Send the trip off slowly: a final swim in a quiet green pool or a long riverside breakfast before you load the car. From Kobarid the drive back toward Ljubljana and its airport takes a few scenic hours. Alternatively, the Italian border is just to the west, making it an easy run on to Trieste and the Adriatic or into the Friuli wine hills if you have time to spare. After rapids, waterfalls, and one unforgettable dinner, it is a fitting, unrushed exit from the valley.

Frequently asked questions

Do you need a car for the Soča Valley?
Yes. Public transport in the valley is thin, and the trip moves between Bovec and Kobarid with side trips to waterfalls, gorges, and the high Mangart road that buses do not serve. Rent in Ljubljana, or arrive by car from Italy over the border.
What is this trip best for?
Adventure and food. Upstream Bovec is the whitewater hub for rafting and kayaking the emerald Soča, while downstream Kobarid pairs moving WWI history with Hiša Franko, one of the world's great restaurants. Book that dinner well ahead.
How does this compare to the 7-day Julian Alps trip?
This is the focused, valley-deep version, all Soča, no lakes. The 7-day Julian Alps loop adds Bled and Bohinj and approaches the valley over the Vršič Pass. Choose this one if the river, the adventure, and the food are what you are really here for.
When is the best time for the Soča Valley?
June to September is the heart of the season, when the river is at its best for rafting and kayaking and the high Mangart road is clear of snow. Summer is warmest and liveliest; September brings golden light, cooler water, and thinner crowds. The whitewater is most reliable through the warmer months.
Where do you fly in and out for this trip?
Ljubljana is the closest airport and the easiest place to rent a car. Many travelers fly into Venice, Trieste, or Treviso instead and drive in over the border from Italy, which is straightforward and often better for flight options. The valley is compact, so where you start matters less than having a car once you are there.
How should you split the nights between Bovec and Kobarid?
Lead with Bovec, the adventure hub: two or three nights upstream for the rafting, the gorges, and the high Mangart road, then two downstream in Kobarid for the WWI history and the food. Reserve dinner at Hiša Franko well ahead, since that meal is reason enough to weight a night toward Kobarid.
