Shape

Point-to-point

The full Alpe-Adria Trail runs some 750 km in 37 stages from the foot of Austria's Grossglockner to the Adriatic at Muggia — but its most loved section is the tri-border week, a roughly 130 km walk that crosses Austria, Slovenia, and Italy from the Julian Alps down towards the sea. This is the antithesis of the high passes: gentle, cultural, easy underfoot, threading lakes, river gorges, vineyards, and three cuisines. It's the Alps for people who'd rather sip than scramble.

Why walk it

  • Walk from alpine lakes to the Adriatic, ticking off three countries in a week
  • The luminous emerald Soča river, the most beautiful in the Julian Alps
  • Three cuisines in seven days — Austrian, Slovenian, and Italian Friuli
  • Gentle, low-altitude stages that suit walkers who don't want high cols

The biggest mistake

Expecting big mountains. This trail's magic is cultural and pastoral — lakes, gorges, villages, and food — not summit drama. Come for the variety and the easy rhythm, and it's one of the most charming walks in Europe; come for the high Alps and you'll feel let down.

Good to know

Questions, answered

Is the Alpe-Adria Trail difficult?
No — it's one of the easier long-distance routes in the Alps by design. Stages are mostly low-altitude on good tracks and paths, with modest daily ascents and no high passes or exposure on the tri-border section. It suits walkers who want scenery, culture, and food over a full day's walking without the demands of a high-mountain trek.
How does crossing three countries on foot work?
Austria, Slovenia, and Italy are all in the Schengen area, so the borders are open — you often cross from one country to the next with nothing but a change of language on the signs. The trail is waymarked throughout, and self-guided operators handle the cross-border accommodation and luggage transfers so the logistics never intrude.
When is the best time to walk it?
Late spring (May–June) and early autumn (September–October) are ideal. Because the trail stays low, summer can be hot in the Italian and Slovenian sections, while the shoulder seasons bring comfortable walking temperatures, green or golden landscapes, and the wine harvest in Brda come September.
