Briançon
The fortified high town, gateway to Serre Chevalier and the sun.

Briançon is the highest town in France, a sun-soaked fortress city in the Hautes-Alpes whose Vauban ramparts and steep old streets are a UNESCO site. It's the gateway to the Serre Chevalier ski valley and, in summer, to the high passes and the Écrins, with the Italian border and the southern light just over the hill. Drier, sunnier, and less glossy than the Tarentaise resorts, it pairs a real lived-in town with big Southern Alps terrain, a different, more authentic side of the French Alps.
Car or train?
Briançon is reachable by train, but a car unlocks the best of the surrounding area: the passes, the trailheads, and the villages transit does not reach.
How it scores
Best for
- ✓History and ramparts
- ✓Serre Chevalier skiing
- ✓Southern Alps sun
- ✓Cyclists (high passes)
- ✓A real town, not a resort
Who should skip it
- ✕Ski-in ski-out
- ✕Glossy resort polish
- ✕Lake scenery
Signature experiences
- Walking the Vauban ramparts and steep streets of the old upper town, a UNESCO fortress
- Skiing the long, sunny Serre Chevalier valley up the road
- Cycling or driving the legendary passes, the Galibier, Izoard, and Lautaret, from the door
Biggest mistake
Treating it as just a ski stop. Briançon is a genuine historic town with year-round life and the sunniest, most pass-rich corner of the French Alps, so give the ramparts and the high roads their due, not only the pistes.
Worth the splurge
A characterful stay in or below the old fortified town, and a guided day on the Écrins peaks or the great cycling cols.
Briançon questions, answered
The practical things travelers ask most before booking this base.
- How many days do you need in Briançon?
- Three or four nights. A day for the fortified old town, a day or two for Serre Chevalier or the high passes, and time for the Écrins valleys. Cyclists and skiers often stay longer.
- Do you need a car in Briançon?
- The town is reachable by train and Serre Chevalier is a short bus ride, but the famous passes (Galibier, Izoard) and the Écrins valleys are far easier with a car, so most visitors bring one.
- Is Briançon good for skiing?
- Yes, it's the gateway to Serre Chevalier, one of the larger Southern Alps ski areas, known for sunshine and tree-lined runs. The town sits at the valley's lower end, with lifts up from Briançon itself and the villages above.
- What makes Briançon special?
- It's the highest town in France and a Vauban fortress city with UNESCO ramparts, drier and sunnier than the northern Alps. It blends real historic-town life with big Southern Alps skiing, hiking, and the most famous cycling passes in the country.
- When is the best time to visit Briançon?
- It's a true two-season town. January and February bring the sunny, tree-lined Serre Chevalier skiing, while July and September open the high passes and the Écrins valleys for hiking and cycling. As the sunniest, driest corner of the French Alps, it rewards both winter and summer visits.
- Is Briançon good value?
- Yes, by French Alps standards. It's a real lived-in town rather than a glossy purpose-built resort, so lodging and dining run more affordable than the Tarentaise names, and it scores well on value. You trade ski-in ski-out convenience for a genuine, sunnier, fairer-priced base.
