Mürren
A car-free cliff village with the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau face to face.
Mürren is a tiny, car-free village on a cliff terrace high above the Lauterbrunnen valley, with an unobstructed, face-on view of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau. Reached only by cable car or mountain train, it is the quietest and most dramatic of the Jungfrau balconies, and the gateway to the Schilthorn and its revolving Piz Gloria summit.
Car or train?
Skip the car. Mürren is well served by trains and easy to get around on foot or by mountain lift. Parking is tight and a car is more hassle than help.

Signature experiences
- The face-on Eiger-Mönch-Jungfrau view from the village edge
- The cable car to the Schilthorn and its revolving Piz Gloria restaurant
- The near-level Northface Trail and the walk down to Gimmelwald
Biggest mistake
Day-tripping up for the Schilthorn and leaving. Mürren is at its best in the quiet hours after the last cable car, when the valley fills with cloud and the peaks glow.
Worth the splurge
A south-facing balcony room toward the three peaks, and breakfast up at the revolving Piz Gloria.
Mürren questions, answered
The practical things travelers ask most before booking this base.
- How many days do you need in Mürren?
- Two to three nights. Mürren is tiny and slow by design: the near-level Northface Trail, the cable car to the Schilthorn and its revolving Piz Gloria, the walk down to Gimmelwald, and a lot of just taking in the view. Pair it with the wider Jungfrau region.
- Do you need a car in Mürren?
- No. Mürren is car-free and among the most remote of the Jungfrau balconies, reached only by cable car and mountain train via Lauterbrunnen (or the Stechelberg cableway). You park in the valley and ride up.
- When is the best time to visit Mürren?
- June to September for hiking and the clearest views, and winter for quiet skiing and the snow-globe version. Mürren is sleepier than neighbouring Wengen, which is exactly its appeal.
- Mürren or Wengen, which has the better view?
- Mürren, for sheer drama, it looks straight across at the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau lined up over the void, with the Schilthorn above. Wengen is sunnier and livelier; Mürren is the quietest, most jaw-dropping balcony in the Alps.
- How do you get to Mürren?
- By rail and cable car. Fly into Zurich, Bern, or Geneva, take the train to Lauterbrunnen, then ride the cable car and mountain train up, or come via the Stechelberg cableway. Mürren is car-free, so you leave any vehicle down in the valley and finish the climb on the lifts.
- Is Mürren expensive?
- It's mid-range for Switzerland, which still means not cheap, but it's gentler than the marquee resorts like Zermatt or St. Moritz. You're paying for one of the most dramatic, quietest balconies in the Alps rather than a flashy scene, and the small, family-run feel keeps it grounded.
