Saas-Fee
The car-free 'Pearl of the Alps' in a ring of 4,000-metre peaks.

Saas-Fee sits in a glacier amphitheatre encircled by thirteen 4,000-metre peaks, a car-free village of weathered timber granaries beneath the Feegletscher. Quieter and more authentic than its famous neighbour Zermatt, it offers year-round glacier skiing, the world's highest revolving restaurant, and a genuine Valaisan village feel.
Car or train?
You can base in Saas-Fee car-free and reach it by train, but a car widens your range to the quieter valleys and trailheads nearby.
How it scores
Best for
- ✓Car-free seekers
- ✓Glacier & high mountains
- ✓Families
- ✓Authentic village feel
- ✓Year-round snow
Who should skip it
- ✕Travelers wanting a big-name scene
- ✕Anyone who must drive to the door
- ✕Budget travelers
Signature experiences
- The Allalin revolving restaurant and the Metro Alpin, the world's highest underground funicular
- The Feegletscher glacier viewpoints and the Hannig walks
- The car-free village of weathered timber stadel
Biggest mistake
Comparing it to Zermatt and expecting the Matterhorn scene. Saas-Fee is quieter and cosier, and it is about the whole glacier ring, not one famous peak.
Worth the splurge
Lunch at the Allalin revolving restaurant at 3,500m, and a wellness hotel facing the Feegletscher.
Saas-Fee questions, answered
The practical things travelers ask most before booking this base.
- How many days do you need in Saas-Fee?
- Two to three nights. Saas-Fee sits in a glacier amphitheatre, so give it a day for the high lifts and the Mittelallalin, a day for the surrounding trails, and time for the car-free village itself. It's a quieter, more rugged neighbour to Zermatt.
- Do you need a car in Saas-Fee?
- No, the village is car-free. You park at the entrance and walk or take an electric cart. Postbuses connect it to the rail network at Visp and Brig; there's no train into Saas-Fee itself.
- When is the best time to visit Saas-Fee?
- July to September for hiking among the glaciers, and winter for snow-sure, high-altitude skiing, with glacier skiing running into the warmer months too. Spring and autumn are quiet, with some lifts between seasons.
- Is Saas-Fee or Zermatt better?
- Zermatt for the Matterhorn icon, the dining, and the scene; Saas-Fee for a quieter, glacier-ringed village at a gentler price. Both are car-free and spectacular; Saas-Fee is the lower-key, more family-feeling of the two.
- How do you get to Saas-Fee?
- By train and postbus. Fly into Zurich, Geneva, or Milan Malpensa, take the train through the Rhône valley to Visp or Brig, then ride the postbus up the Saas valley, there's no rail line into Saas-Fee itself. The village is car-free, so you park at the entrance and walk or take an electric cart.
- Is Saas-Fee good for families?
- Very. The car-free village lets kids roam safely, the prices are gentler than glitzier neighbours, and the glacier amphitheatre, the high Metro Alpin funicular, and year-round snow give plenty to do. Its cosy, authentic feel makes it one of the more family-friendly high-mountain bases in the Valais.
