🇦🇹 Austrian Alps

Sölden

Glacier skiing and high Ötztal peaks, snow-sure and lively.

Sölden

Sölden is the big, buzzing resort at the head of the Ötztal, one of Austria's most snow-sure thanks to two glaciers and a lift network climbing past 3,000m on the Gaislachkogl. The skiing is extensive and high, the après lively, and the scenery, the Ötztal Alps and the road up to the Timmelsjoch pass, genuinely dramatic. Made famous by a James Bond film and its mountain-top restaurant, it's a modern, energetic base built for big-mountain days rather than quiet charm.

Best for

  • Skiers and snowboarders
  • Glacier and snow-sure skiing
  • Après-ski
  • High-mountain scenery
  • Active summers

Who should skip it

  • Quiet village charm
  • Train-only travelers
  • A sleepy base

Signature experiences

  • The Gaislachkogl cable car to 3,000m, with its glass-walled summit restaurant and Bond museum
  • Skiing or summer-driving up to the two glaciers and the Timmelsjoch high-alpine road
  • Big-mountain ski days across one of Austria's most reliable, highest areas

Biggest mistake

Expecting a quiet Tyrolean village. Sölden is a large, lively, modern resort with serious après, so come for the snow-sure, high-altitude skiing and the energy, and head to Obergurgl or the side valleys if you want calm.

Worth the splurge

A wellness hotel with a spa near the Gaislachkogl lift, and a long lunch at the glass-walled summit restaurant on a bluebird day.

Good to know

Sölden questions, answered

The practical things travelers ask most before booking this base.

How many days do you need in Sölden?
A full ski week suits the size and altitude of the area. In summer, a few days cover the glacier road, the Timmelsjoch, and the Ötztal trails.
Do you need a car in Sölden?
For the skiing alone, no, transfers and the ski bus cover the resort. But the Ötztal valley, the Timmelsjoch pass, and the glacier roads are far better with a car, so most visitors bring one.
Is Sölden good for snow?
Among the best in Austria. Two glaciers and a lift network reaching past 3,000m make it one of the country's most snow-sure resorts, with a long season that opens early and runs late.
Is Sölden good for families or quiet trips?
It's big, high, and lively, great for keen skiers and après, but not the quiet, storybook option. For a calmer family base in the same valley, Obergurgl-Hochgurgl up the road is gentler.
