Mojstrana

The quiet north gateway to Triglav, with waterfall valleys.

Mojstrana

Mojstrana is a small village in the Upper Sava Valley, the unshowy northern gateway to Mount Triglav and the wild glacial valleys of Vrata, Kot, and Krma that cut south into the Julian Alps. The classic north approach to Triglav begins here, and the easy walk to the Peričnik waterfall, one of Slovenia's most striking, is minutes away. It's a climbers' and walkers' base, plain and friendly, with the Slovenian Alpine Museum in the village and Kranjska Gora's lifts and lakes a short drive west.

Best for

  • Waterfalls
  • Serious hikers
  • A quiet valley base
  • Value

Who should skip it

  • Resort comforts
  • Non-hikers
  • Lively evenings

Signature experiences

  • The short walk up the Vrata valley to the Peričnik waterfall, dramatic behind its rock overhang
  • Starting the classic north route up Triglav from the head of the Vrata valley
  • The Slovenian Alpine Museum, on the history of Triglav and Julian Alps climbing

Biggest mistake

Underestimating Triglav from here. The north-face approach is a serious, multi-day mountaineering route, not a day hike, so come prepared, hire a guide, and use the village as a proper basecamp rather than a quick stop.

Worth the splurge

A guided two-day ascent of Triglav from the Vrata valley, with a night in a mountain hut high on the route.

Good to know

Mojstrana questions, answered

The practical things travelers ask most before booking this base.

How many days do you need in Mojstrana?
Two or three nights as a hiking base, more if you're attempting Triglav, which is a multi-day undertaking. Save time for the Peričnik waterfall and the Vrata, Kot, and Krma valleys.
Do you need a car in Mojstrana?
Effectively yes. The village sits on the main valley road, but the glacial valleys and trailheads that are the whole point are reached by car or a seasonal shuttle. A car also opens up Kranjska Gora and the Vršič pass nearby.
Can you climb Triglav from Mojstrana?
Yes, it's the classic northern start. The route up the Vrata valley to the north face is one of the great Slovenian ascents, but it's serious mountaineering over two days with a hut night, best done with a guide unless you're experienced.
What is the Peričnik waterfall?
A two-tier waterfall in the Vrata valley above Mojstrana, famous because the path lets you walk behind the lower fall. It's an easy, short outing from the village and one of the most photogenic spots in the Julian Alps.
