Prien am Chiemsee

Lakeside town on the Bavarian Sea, gateway to a fairytale island palace.

Prien am Chiemsee

Prien is the main town on the Chiemsee, Bavaria's largest lake, nicknamed the Bavarian Sea, with the Chiemgau Alps rising along its southern shore. From Prien's harbour, boats cross to Herreninsel and Ludwig II's vast, Versailles-inspired Herrenchiemsee palace, and to the painters' island of Frauenchiemsee. It's a relaxed lake-and-leisure base, swimming, sailing, and a steam tram to the water, with easy rail access from Munich and Salzburg and the mountains a short hop south for hikers.

Go car-free

Car or train?

Skip the car. Prien am Chiemsee is well served by trains and easy to get around on foot or by mountain lift. Parking is tight and a car is more hassle than help.

Best for

  • Lake leisure
  • Herrenchiemsee palace
  • Families
  • Easy Munich access
  • Sailing and swimming

Who should skip it

  • High-mountain drama on the doorstep
  • Skiing
  • Nightlife

Signature experiences

  • The boat to Herreninsel and Ludwig II's unfinished, gilded Herrenchiemsee palace
  • A swim or sail on the Chiemsee, the Bavarian Sea, with the Alps as a backdrop
  • The historic Chiemsee-Bahn steam tram from town down to the harbour

Biggest mistake

Rushing the islands in an afternoon. Give Herrenchiemsee and the quieter Fraueninsel a full day by boat, and use Prien's lakeside as a restful base rather than a quick palace stop.

Worth the splurge

A lakefront room with a jetty and lake views, and an unhurried island day with lunch on Fraueninsel.

Good to know

Prien am Chiemsee questions, answered

The practical things travelers ask most before booking this base.

How many days do you need in Prien am Chiemsee?
Two or three nights. A full day for the islands and the Herrenchiemsee palace by boat, time on the lake itself, and a day for the Chiemgau mountains if you want a hike.
Do you need a car in Prien am Chiemsee?
No. Prien is right on the Munich-Salzburg rail line, the lake boats leave from its harbour, and the town is walkable. A car only helps for exploring the Chiemgau Alps to the south.
What is Herrenchiemsee?
Ludwig II's grand palace on the Chiemsee's largest island, Herreninsel, modelled on Versailles and never finished. Reached by boat from Prien, its mirror hall and gardens are among Bavaria's most spectacular royal sights.
Is the Chiemsee good for families?
Very. Calm swimming, boat trips to the islands, the little steam tram, and gentle lakeside paths make Prien and the Chiemsee one of the most relaxed, kid-friendly bases in the Bavarian Alps' foothills.
