The Gotthard Panorama Express is two journeys in one, and unlike any other Alpine train. It opens with a nostalgic paddle-steamer cruise down Lake Lucerne, gliding past the Rütli meadow where Switzerland was founded and the William Tell country of legend, before you swap the boat for a panoramic train at Flüelen. From there it climbs the historic Gotthard railway, spiralling past the much-photographed Wassen church and looping through the 19th-century spiral tunnels, then bores through the original 1882 summit tunnel and emerges into sunny, Italian-speaking Ticino. It trades raw altitude for variety and history, and ends among the palms of lakeside Lugano, a genuinely different way to cross the Alps.
Is it worth it?
Worth it for the sheer variety. Few train trips start with a steamboat, and fewer pack a founding-myth lake, a Victorian engineering epic, and a palm-lined Italian-Swiss finish into one day. The historic Gotthard line and its looping spiral tunnels are a marvel, and stepping off into Lugano feels like crossing a border without one.

- The boat and train legs are reserved separately and meet at Flüelen, so you can ride just one half if time is short
- Going south to Lugano ends on the sunny, palm-lined Ticino side, the more rewarding direction

The trip opens with a historic Belle Époque steamboat down the fjord-like arms of Lake Lucerne, a leisurely two hours and change on deck.

- How long does the Gotthard Panorama Express take?
- About five and a half hours end to end: nearly three leisurely hours on the paddle-steamer from Lucerne to Flüelen, an easy platform change, then roughly two hours on the panoramic train through the spirals and the old summit tunnel down to Lugano. Treat it as the day's main event rather than a transfer, and plan your evening around arriving in Ticino.
- Is the Gotthard Panorama Express running year-round?
- No. It's a seasonal service, typically operating from April to October. Outside those months you can still cross the Gotthard by regular train, but the panoramic carriages and the lake-steamer combination don't run, so check dates before planning around it.
- Do you have to do both the boat and the train?
- No. The Lake Lucerne cruise and the panoramic rail leg are booked separately and meet at Flüelen, so you can ride the full combination or just one half. A common plan is the steamer one way and the train back, or skipping the boat and joining the panoramic train at Flüelen if you're short on time.
- Is the Gotthard Panorama Express covered by the Swiss Travel Pass?
- Yes. The Swiss Travel Pass and the Swiss Half Fare Card cover both the lake steamer and the train; only the panoramic-train seat reservation is extra. If you'd rather not pay the reservation, you can ride the same historic Gotthard line on ordinary trains, fully covered by a pass, just without the panoramic carriages.
- Gotthard Panorama Express or Bernina Express?
- Different strengths. The Bernina Express is higher and more dramatic, crossing the highest rail pass in the Alps into Italy in an efficient four hours. The Gotthard pairs a lake steamer with a historic, spiral-tunnel railway over a full day, lower in altitude but richer in variety and history. For raw mountain scenery take the Bernina; for a varied day on water and rails, take the Gotthard.
