Bolzano
South Tyrol's bilingual capital, wine, Ötzi, and the rail gateway to the Dolomites.
Bolzano (Bozen) is where Italy and Austria meet over a glass of Lagrein: arcaded streets, a buzzing produce market, the world-famous Ötzi the Iceman, and vineyards climbing the slopes on three sides. It isn't a trailhead town, but it's the one Dolomites base you can reach by train, and the most rewarding place to start a trip, eat well, and acclimatise before the peaks.
