Castelrotto

A storybook South Tyrolean village beneath the vast Alpe di Siusi.

Castelrotto

Castelrotto (Kastelruth) is the quintessential South Tyrolean village, a cluster of pastel houses around a soaring bell tower beneath the Sciliar massif, and the gateway to the Alpe di Siusi, the largest high-alpine meadow in Europe. Trilingual, traditional, and far calmer than the Val Gardena resorts next door, it is a base for gentle meadow walks under the Dolomite peaks.

Best for

  • Storybook villages
  • Gentle hiking & meadows
  • Families
  • Couples
  • South Tyrol culture

Who should skip it

  • Hardcore via-ferrata seekers
  • Anyone wanting a lively resort scene

Signature experiences

  • The Alpe di Siusi (Seiser Alm) at dawn, the largest high meadow in the Alps
  • The Sciliar (Schlern) massif and the Santner spire above the village
  • The frescoed houses and bell tower of the car-light old centre

Biggest mistake

Driving up onto the Alpe di Siusi at midday in summer, when the access road is closed to day traffic. Take the cable car from Siusi, or go early.

Worth the splurge

A balcony room facing the Sciliar, and a long lunch at a malga (mountain hut) out on the meadow.
