Kamnik
A medieval town under wild peaks, gateway to Velika Planina.
Kamnik is a handsome medieval town just north of Ljubljana, its centre of pastel houses and twin castle hills sitting at the foot of the wild Kamnik-Savinja Alps. It's the gateway to Velika Planina, a high pasture plateau of round herdsmen's huts reached by cable car, and to the glacial valleys of Kamniška Bistrica and beyond. Far quieter than Bled, it pairs an easy trip from the capital with a genuine, less-touristed slice of the Slovenian Alps.
Car or train?
Kamnik is reachable by train, but a car unlocks the best of the surrounding area: the passes, the trailheads, and the villages transit does not reach.
How it scores
Best for
- ✓Day trips from Ljubljana
- ✓Off the beaten path
- ✓Velika Planina
- ✓Medieval town charm
- ✓Value
Who should skip it
- ✕Big-resort amenities
- ✕Lake scenery on the doorstep
- ✕Nightlife
Signature experiences
- The cable car up to Velika Planina and its village of round wooden herdsmen's huts
- Wandering Kamnik's old town beneath the Mali Grad castle chapel
- Driving into the Kamniška Bistrica valley to the springs and trailheads under Grintovec
Biggest mistake
Treating it only as a quick day trip. Kamnik rewards a night: an evening in the old town, then an early cable car to Velika Planina before the day crowds, and an alpine valley to yourself.
Worth the splurge
A guided ascent or a hut night high in the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, with dinner back in the old town.
Kamnik questions, answered
The practical things travelers ask most before booking this base.
- How many days do you need in Kamnik?
- A night or two. An afternoon for the old town, a day for Velika Planina and the Kamniška Bistrica valley. It also works as an easy day trip from Ljubljana, about half an hour away.
- Do you need a car in Kamnik?
- The town is reachable by train from Ljubljana, but the best of the area, Velika Planina's cable car, the Kamniška Bistrica valley, the trailheads, is far easier with a car, so most visitors bring one.
- What is Velika Planina?
- A high mountain pasture above Kamnik, one of Europe's largest, dotted with the distinctive round wooden huts of its herdsmen. A cable car and chairlift carry you up to gentle walks, big views, and a taste of old alpine shepherd life.
- Is Kamnik worth visiting over Bled?
- It's a different, quieter pick. Bled has the famous lake and the crowds; Kamnik offers a medieval town and wilder, less-touristed mountains for a fraction of the fuss. Many travelers do both, they're under an hour apart.
- When is the best time to visit Kamnik?
- Late spring through early autumn, roughly May to September. The Velika Planina pastures and the Kamniška Bistrica valley are at their best in warm, clear weather, and the herdsmen's huts on the plateau are part of a living summer grazing tradition. Spring and September bring fewer day-trippers from Ljubljana.
- Is Kamnik good for hiking?
- Very, it scores top marks here. The wild Kamnik-Savinja Alps rise right behind town, with everything from gentle walks on the Velika Planina plateau to serious ascents toward Grintovec from the Kamniška Bistrica valley. It's a genuine, less-crowded hiking base within easy reach of the capital.
