Courmayeur
Mont Blanc's stylish Italian side, where the high Alps meet la dolce vita.

Courmayeur sits beneath the Italian flank of Mont Blanc, a chic stone-and-timber village that pairs serious high-mountain drama with Italian style: cobbled streets, a pedestrian Via Roma of boutiques and enotecas, and the spectacular Skyway cable car up to Punta Helbronner. It is Chamonix's warmer, more relaxed cousin across the Mont Blanc tunnel.
Car or train?
Plan to drive. Courmayeur and the passes, valleys, and trailheads around it are slow or impractical to reach by public transport.

Who should skip it
- ✕Budget travelers
- ✕Anyone wanting a quiet hamlet
- ✕Train-only travelers
Signature experiences
- The Skyway Monte Bianco rotating cable car to 3,466m
- The Val Ferret and Val Veny meadows beneath the Mont Blanc glaciers
- Aperitivo and Aostan cooking on the pedestrian Via Roma
Biggest mistake
Treating it only as a ski stop. The summer meadows of Val Ferret and Val Veny, with Mont Blanc's glaciers overhead, are some of the finest easy walking in the Alps.
Worth the splurge
The Skyway to Punta Helbronner on a clear morning, and a wellness hotel with a Mont Blanc view.
Courmayeur questions, answered
The practical things travelers ask most before booking this base.
- How many days do you need in Courmayeur?
- Two to three nights. Courmayeur is the warm Italian side of Mont Blanc: the Skyway cable car to Punta Helbronner, the green Val Ferret and Val Veny, the cobbled Via Roma, and superb food. A car helps for the side valleys.
- Do you need a car in Courmayeur?
- Helpful but not essential. Courmayeur is walkable and the Skyway leaves from nearby; a car opens up the Val Ferret and Val Veny and the run through the Mont Blanc tunnel to Chamonix. Buses serve the main valleys.
- When is the best time to visit Courmayeur?
- July to September for hiking under Mont Blanc and the green side valleys, and December to April for skiing. The Skyway and the food make it rewarding in any open season; it's sunnier and more relaxed than Chamonix across the tunnel.
- Courmayeur or Chamonix, which should you choose?
- Same mountain, two moods. Chamonix (France) is the bigger, rawer mountaineering capital; Courmayeur (Italy) is warmer, more relaxed, with better food and the panoramic Skyway. They're 15 to 20 minutes apart through the tunnel, so you can do both.
- How do you get to Courmayeur?
- By car, usually. Geneva is the closest major airport, with Turin and Milan Malpensa also in range, and from any of them you drive into the Aosta Valley. The village is walkable and the Skyway leaves from nearby, but a car opens up the Val Ferret and Val Veny and the quick run through the tunnel to Chamonix.
- Is Courmayeur expensive?
- It leans upscale, a stylish, food-focused resort on Mont Blanc's Italian side, so it's pricier than a low-key valley village. You're paying for the dramatic high-mountain setting, the Skyway, and the Aostan cooking. It's still generally easier on the wallet than the big-name Swiss splurge resorts.
